2012 Fantasy Football Mock Draft (Standard Scoring)
| |
Scoring: This mock draft is based on leagues that use standard scoring (i.e., not point-per-reception (PPR) scoring). Passing touchdowns are worth four points while rushing and receiving touchdowns are worth six points. In addition, one point is earned per 25 passing yards, 10 rushing yards and 10 receiving yards.

1 (73).

Dan Yanotchko (Team 1)
Jahvid Best, RB, Lions
If Best can stay healthy a full season (an enormous if), he is a great value at this spot. In the six games he played last year, he had 390 rushing yards and 287 receiving yards. In other words, Best should put up close to (or more than) 100 yards from scrimmage, on average, in the games he does play. The question remains though, how many of those will there be?

Kevin Hanson (Team 1)
Eric Decker, WR, Broncos
As I noted in an earlier round (Round 4), I think Decker is the one to benefit most from the addition of Peyton Manning. (Demaryius Thomas had 75-plus yards in six of his past seven games last year.) There is not a world of difference between Thomas and Decker. Both are big receivers, Thomas is a better athlete but Decker is a very good athlete as well and Decker is a better route-runner than Thomas.

Reggie Wayne, WR, Colts
There is no doubt that Wayne is on the down slope of his career. That said, he missed a 1,000-yard season by only 40 yards last year with a collection of QBs named Kerry Collins, Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky. It can only be better with Andrew Luck, right?, even if Luck has some growing pains in his first season.

Brendan Donahue (Team 1)
Torrey Smith, WR, Ravens
Smith, the Ravens' second-round pick in 2011, is a big-play receiver capable of a monster game (or quarter). He broke out with a three-TD first quarter against the Rams in Week 3 last year. While he may be a little inconsistent, a 1,000-yard season is possible for the second-year receiver.

Brendan Donahue (Team 2)
Pierre Garcon, WR, Redskins
Many people are expecting big things from Garcon this year and I know that Brendan is high on him going into this season. One of RG3's strengths is throwing the deep ball and one of Garcon's strengths is catching the deep ball. My concern about Garcon is his drops and inconsistency, but he could be poised for a big year.

Kevin Hanson (Team 2)
Peyton Manning, QB, Broncos
This team in the mock has a starting quarterback that missed all of last season due to multiple neck surgeries. I'm certainly going to grab a strong backup quarterback, just in case. But Manning has two very good receivers in Thomas and Decker, and he's reunited with tight end Jacob Tamme and slot receiver Brandon Stokley, two players that had success with him in the past. I don't expect pre-injury numbers (4,700 yards and 33 TDs in 2010) from Peyton, but he should throw for more than 4,000 yards and 25 touchdowns if he plays a full season.

| |
7 (79).
Sean Beazley (Team 2)
BenJarvus Green-Ellis, RB, Bengals
The Law Firm landed in a spot where he should get more work than he got with the Patriots last year. While he was one of eight running backs to rush for double-digit touchdowns, he had the fewest carries (181) of the group. Green-Ellis and Bernard Scott could find themselves sharing the workload, but Green-Ellis will continue to get goal-line carries.

8 (80).
Dan Yanotchko (Team 2)
Robert Meachem, WR, Chargers
I was hoping Meachem would slip a couple of spots to me, but he has a chance to take a huge step forward in his production levels in San Diego. Although he's never had more than 45 receptions or 722 yards in a season, Meachem ranks ninth in yards per reception since entering the league and coach Norv Turner expects a big season from Meachem.
9 (81).
Dan Yanotchko (Team 3)
Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Lions
Better in a PPR format, Pettigrew was second in targets (126) among tight ends behind only Jimmy Graham (149) and third in receptions (83) behind Graham (99) and Rob Gronkowski (90). While touchdowns are less predictable, Pettigrew has only 11 TDs in his three seasons with Detroit.

10 (82).
Kevin Hanson (Team 3)
Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Steelers
There are a couple of things to like about Roethlisberger, even if the Steelers want to run the ball more: (1) the emergence of Antonio Brown last year to give Pittsburgh two 1,100-yard receivers, (2) the possible emergence of Emmanuel Sanders (I really like him as a sleeper) this year and (3) the improvement along their offensive line with their first two draft picks this year -- Stanford guard David DeCastro and Ohio State tackle Mike Adams.

11 (83).
Brendan Donahue (Team 3)
Justin Blackmon, WR, Jaguars
Is this too early for Blackmon? I think so. While Blackmon may be subject to league discipline for his recent aggravated DUI arrest, that is not the biggest problem for Blackmon's fantasy value. Unless Blaine Gabbert takes a big step forward in his second campaign (I'm not sure who'd want to take that bet), Blackmon's value is going to be severely limited.
| |
12 (84).
Sean Beazley (Team 3)
Mikel LeShoure, RB, Lions
LeShoure has not gotten off to a good start in his NFL career. Not only did he miss all of last season due to a torn Achilles injury, but he is suspended for the first two games of this season after being arrested twice for marijuana-related charges. That said, he's the big, physical running back that the Lions have lacked.
