2011-2012 NBA Power Rankings - Week 16

Each week, we respond to one roundtable question and here's this week's question: Who will finish with the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference?

Although I'm higher on the Spurs, I still believe that OKC will finish with the 1 seed. I believe that it means more to them, and they will play hard for it down the stretch. San Antonio has shown that they will sit all three of their stars when Pop feels it is necessary. They also know that they can win on the road in the playoffs, if necessary. Of course, they would be happy to have home court throughout, but I think it is more likely to go to OKC, who has been the 1 seed all year. I believe they will make a push to keep it, and Durant and Westbrook will make sure they do. Ultimately, these two teams may meet in the Conference Finals, with Memphis and the two LA teams having a reasonable chance as well.

The Spurs and Thunder are tied in the loss column, but the Thunder have played in (and won) two more games. In addition, it wouldn't surprise me to see the Spurs rest their aging stars as they prepare for the postseason. The Spurs play three straight nights from Monday to Wednesday (vs. the Lakers on Tuesday) and then close the season with four games in five nights. In their final six games, the Thunder play on back-to-back nights only once when they end the season with two home games against Sacramento and Denver. In the end, I think the Thunder hang on their one-game lead.

The Thunder will be taking the top seed this year, as San Antonio will not have the gas to run them down by the end of the year. Even though the Spurs have the easier schedule of the two, they will likely be shutting down the veterans to rest up for their playoff run. The Thunder have three out of their last six games against teams under .500, and will win home court throughout the playoffs.
