Led by starting rookie quarterbacks selected within the first eigth picks in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Colts and Dolphins both figured to spend a year (or two) mired in rebuilding mode.
Going into Week 9, however, the teams have identical 4-3 records and meet this Sunday for a chance to improve to 5-3.
Along with the Steelers, the three teams are currently tied for the two wildcard spots in the AFC. Only three teams have better records in the conference.
With each update, we always all respond to one roundtable question. This update's roundtable topic: Will either the Dolphins or Colts, both 4-3, make the playoffs?
Kevin (follow Kevin on Twitter):
While both of these teams won't make the playoffs, I do think one of them will. Which one? It will be the winner of Sunday's matchup as that team will improve to 5-3 and the loser will fall to 4-4.
Not that 4-4 is insurmountable, but neither of these teams is elite. Instead, they need a few things to go their way in order to advance to the second season.
So, who do I think will win on Sunday? I like the Dolphins to win a close one on the road and improve to 5-3. From that point, a 4-4 finish could be enough to get them into the playoffs.

At the beginning of the year, I had Miami finishing second in the AFC East, but missing the playoffs. I still like them to finish second, but it looks like they're going to actually make a run at a playoff spot.
The Patriots, Ravens, Texans, and Broncos are the division leaders, and are likely to all make the playoffs. That leaves two spots left for teams like the Dolphins, Steelers, Bengals, Colts, and Chargers.
Looking at Miami's schedule, I like them to get to nine wins, while I can only realistically see the Colts getting to eight. As of right now, I like the Dolphins and Steelers to be the two wildcard teams coming out of the AFC, and the Colts among the teams on the outside looking in.
Dan (follow Dan on Twitter):
Between the two teams in the AFC that are 4-3 right now, the Miami Dolphins will make the playoffs while the Colts will end up missing them. Besides having New England twice (whom they always play well), the Dolphins have quite the favorable schedule coming up. They get the Colts, Titans, Jaguars, Bills twice and Seahawks at home.
The Dolphins have surprised me with their great play, and while one wildcard will go to either Baltimore or Pittsburgh, the second AFC wildcard will belong to the Dolphins.
Sean (follow Sean on Twitter):
There has been at least one team to finish in last place each year to win their division the following season since the divisions were expanded in 2002. Both Miami and Indianapolis finished last or tied for last in their division last year, but both find themselves in the playoffs if the season ended today.
I am going to go out on a limb and say this streak semi-continues as the Miami Dolphins will win finish tied with New England for the division at 10-6 at year's end, but lose out on the tiebreaker. Miami has two games left with the Patriots and one tough game at San Fransisco, which they will definitely lose. If you look at the rest of their schedule though it is filled with cupcakes (Indianapolis, Tennessee, Buffalo twice, Seattle (at home) and Jacksonville).
Indianapolis has no shot at the playoffs. Their defense is awful and most likely will lose four of their five remaining road games: Jacksonville, New England, Detroit, Houston and Kansas City. I think the Colts finish either 7-9 or 8-8 tops this season.
Here are some stats on this week's consensus rankings:
- Biggest jump from last update: Miami Dolphins (5.25)
- Biggest drop from last update: New Orleans Saints (6.50)
- Team with widest difference between high and low rank: Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals (10)

All of our rankings are from owner Kevin Hanson, who finished third overall in accuracy by FantasyPros in 2011.
Here's what FantasyPros wrote (about Hanson) in their year-end announcement of accuracy results:
"... Hanson was a fixture in the top 5 throughout the season and even led the contest heading into the final week. He also owns the distinction as being the only expert to eclipse the 70% PAY™ mark for a single position. ... Simply put, if you needed QB advice in 2011, the ultimate source to go to was over at EDSFootball. That’s not to say that Hanson was a one-trick pony, however. He also earned a top 10 rating at both WR (# 3) & RB (# 8), demonstrating that he’s among the best of the best when it comes to fantasy prognostication."
