The NFL's reigning MVP is Aaron Rodgers (see past winners) and although he and the Packers got off to a slow(ish) start, they appear to have turned things around.
After setting the league's single-season record for passer rating, he once again leads the league in the category (109.6).
During the past four games, however, Rodgers' passer rating is 127.2. In fact, he has had a triple-digit passer rating in all four of those games.
Over that four-game span, Rodgers has averaged 308.5 passing yards per game and posted a 16:2 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He now leads the league in passing touchdowns (19) as well.
Two weeks ago, Rodgers threw six touchdowns against the Texans when they had allowed only six passing touchdowns in their previous five games combined. Last week, he threw three touchdowns even though the Rams had allowed a league-low four passing touchdowns in their previous six games combined.
Here are some stats on this week's consensus rankings:
- Biggest jump from last update: New Orleans Saints (4.75)
- Biggest drop from last update: Buffalo Bills (-4.25)
- Team with widest difference between high and low rank: Arizona Cardinals (8)
With each update, we always all respond to one roundtable question. This update's roundtable topic: Through seven weeks, who would get your vote for league MVP?
Kevin (follow Kevin on Twitter): Aaron Rodgers, Packers
As I noted above with Rodgers, you could easily argue that Rodgers deserves to be the league MVP and I will. Despite their 4-3 record, the Packers should be 5-2 if it weren't for a bogus call on the Fail Mary play in Seattle.
While Rodgers is playing MVP-caliber football, he has some reasons why he shouldn't. The team has offensive line issues and Kevin Kolb (27) is the only player to be sacked more times than Rodgers (26) so far this season. Although the team is loaded at receiver, the Packers have only one reception from perennial Pro Bowler Greg Jennings over the past four weeks.
Not only does he lead the league in passer rating and passing touchdowns, he's still on pace to finish with 43 passing touchdowns, only two shy of the Packers' franchise record he set last year, despite his slow start.
John (follow John on Twitter): J.J. Watt, Texans
After the first quarter of the season, I think Matt Ryan was the clear frontrunner for MVP. Since then, he and the Falcons have cooled (although remained undefeated), and a few other candidates have emerged. Among them are Aaron Rodgers, who has thrown nine TDs and zero INTs in his last two games and leads the league with a 109 rating, Peyton Manning, who has 14 TDs and only one INT on the year if you take out the first quarter of the Falcons game, JJ Watt, who leads the league with 9.5 sacks and 10 pass deflections, and Percy Harvin, who runs the ball, returns kicks, and is Minnesota's top receiver.
Harvin is the less conventional choice, but his versatility has led the Vikings to a 5-2 record and into playoff contention, when popular opinion had them as the punching bag of the NFC North. My preseason pick for MVP was Aaron Rodgers, and by season's end, I stand behind that pick. However, through seven weeks, I'm gonna show love to the defensive side of the ball and go with JJ Watt. Watt had at least one sack in each of the first six games of the year, and is a major reason why the Texans are on their way to the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
Dan (follow Dan on Twitter): Matt Ryan, Falcons
It's a QB league, and right now the MVP has to go to the quarterback of the best team in football, and that is Matt Ryan of the Falcons. Ryan has guided Atlanta to a 6-0 start, and has steadily developed into one of the best QBs in the league. Ryan's numbers aren't overly gaudy, but he is tied for 3rd in the league with passing TDs, and also averages 293 yards per game and a 67.8 ccompletion percentage. Right now the MVP race would be really tight, but it will all come down to who is the best QB on the best team, and that is Matty Ice right now.
Sean (follow Sean on Twitter): J.J. Watt, Texans
The last defensive player to win a MVP award was Giants great Lawrence Taylor. That being said, my choice for MVP so far this year would be Texans DE J.J Watt. Watt leads the NFL in sacks with 9.5 and is second in passes defended with 10, which is also pretty ridiculous considering the next closest D-Lineman has 4. The talk of this offseason was about how the Texans defense would take a step back after losing Mario Williams to free agency. Watt has stepped right in and is one of the main reasons why the Texans are on top of the AFC. I know this won't be a popular choice, but some of the other candidates (Matt Ryan and Eli Manning) statistically aren't having the year that Watt is having.

All of our rankings are from owner Kevin Hanson, who finished third overall in accuracy by FantasyPros in 2011.
Here's what FantasyPros wrote (about Hanson) in their year-end announcement of accuracy results:
"... Hanson was a fixture in the top 5 throughout the season and even led the contest heading into the final week. He also owns the distinction as being the only expert to eclipse the 70% PAY™ mark for a single position. ... Simply put, if you needed QB advice in 2011, the ultimate source to go to was over at EDSFootball. That’s not to say that Hanson was a one-trick pony, however. He also earned a top 10 rating at both WR (# 3) & RB (# 8), demonstrating that he’s among the best of the best when it comes to fantasy prognostication."
