2012 NFL Power Rankings - Week 14

Lions receiver Calvin Johnson extended his 100-yard game streak to five games with 13 receptions for 171 yards and a touchdown this past weekend.

During that five-game span, Megatron has a total of 45 receptions for 790 yards and four touchdowns.

With 1,428 receiving yards on the season, Johnson is currently on pace to beat the all-time single-season receiving yardage record (1,848 yards) set by Hall-of-Famer Jerry Rice (1995).

In addition, Matthew Stafford is on pace to throw for just shy of 5,000 yards for a second straight season. If he maintains his pace for the rest of the way, he'll finish with 4,989 yards.

Regardless of the competition, no receiver can take over a game like Megatron. In other words, the opposition has to worry about their tough matchup against him more than he has to worry about some of the tough defenses he will face down the stretch.

Counting last year's playoffs, he has four 200-yard games (and 12 games with at least 100 yards) in his last 16 games played. During those 16 games, he has a total of 2,199 receiving yards.

2,199 yards!

In order to tie the record, Megatron needs 420 yards (or 105 per game). While he may not get 105-plus yards in all four of his remaining games, it's certainly possible that he has a couple of 100-yard games, one huge game (close to 200) and one sub-par (for his standards) type of game (e.g., 40-50 yards).

If he does, he'll become the new recordholder.

[FYI: The season that Rice set the record, he caught 16 touchdown passes, ran for a score and threw for another on his only pass attempt.]

I think Calvin Johnson will break the single-season receiving yards record this year. Johnson seems to get double-digit targets per game, and he's just unstoppable. He has almost 250 yards more than the next closest receiver and is averaging almost 120 yards per game.

I see no reason why this should stop down the stretch. Stafford became only the fourth quarterback ever to throw for 5,000 passing yards in a season last year. This year, his favorite target is likely to best Jerry Rice's single-season record.

Jerry Rice has an impressive receiving record that has stood since 1995 when he had an amazing 1,848 yards receiving. Although he hasn't found the end zone as much and also got off to a slow start, Calvin Johnson has come on like gangbusters.

Currently he has 1,428 yards receiving for the year, and in four games he will need 420 to surpass the great Jerry Rice. I think that Megatron will break Rice's record this year, as the Lions have the best passing offense in the game, and he only needs to average 105 yards per game, which is a normal day for him.
