Hill benched for Smith, 3 TDs for Davis

The San Francisco 49ers have benched quarterback Shaun Hill at halftime and have installed Alex Smith as their starter.

And Smith, who was the top overall draft pick in 2005, made the most of his opportunity.

The 49ers got out to a 21-0 deficit with Hill under center, but Smith led the Niners back to within a field goal.

Hill completed six of 11 passes for only 45 yards.

In his place, Smith completed 15 of 22 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns. All of Smith's passing touchdowns were caught by tight end Vernon Davis.

Unfortunately for the Niners, Smith's last pass of the game was an interception by Eugene Wilson.

But he certaintly provided a spark for this offense and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the start next week at Indianapolis.

Last year, I predicted a breakout year for Vernon Davis. I apparently I was one year too early. Davis now has 29 receptions, 355 yards and six touchdowns in six games.
