Kevin Kolb is #2 on depth chart (for now)
Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb will begin the season as the team's second quarterback behind starter Donovan McNabb, per Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News.
However, coach Andy Reid said that "it depends on how we work the roster on game day."
Earlier in the week, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reduced the length of Michael Vick's suspension to two regular-season games.
As Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer points out, it would make sense to make Vick the team's second quarterback and Kolb the team's third quarterback after Vick serves out his suspension.
The NFL allows teams to dress a third/emergency quarterback as a 46th player. However, if the third quarterback enters the game, the first two quarterbacks are no longer allowed to play (at any position).
So, if the week three QB depth chart read McNabb, Kolb and Vick, the Eagles wouldn't be allowed to play McNabb or Kolb if Vick took a snap from center.
"I haven't talked to Andy at all about it. I would hope that their plan was to have me as the No. 2 guy, if something was to happen to 'five.' But again, whatever's best for the team . . . I want to be out there, and I want to have a chance to play if something was to happen," Kolb said.
There is a good chance that last year's emergency quarterback A.J. Feeley will be cut today. As teams reduce their rosters to 53 (from 75), the deadline to make those cuts is this afternoon.
