Mark Sanchez named starter vs Ravens
The Jets began the off-season with a quarterback competition between Kellen Clemens and rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez although most expected Sanchez to "win" the job -- either by the season opener or during the season. After all, new head coach Rex Ryan traded up to fifth overall to select Sanchez in this year's NFL draft.
After the team's first pre-season game, Ryan has named Sanchez, who completed a 48-yard pass on his first throw in the Jets' first pre-season game, as the starter for their second pre-season game. Facing three blitzes in his first game, Sanchez completed three of four passes for 88 yards.
''I think he showed us everything we needed to see,'' Ryan said [of Sanchez's performance]. ''He completed a vertical route, mid-range pass, he completed everything.''
Previously, Ryan had stated that he wanted to name the team's starter by the third pre-season game.
''The guy is a born leader,'' wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery said. ''He carries himself the right way. He's very confident. He's a talented player.''
I would be very surprised if Sanchez isn't starting on September 13th when the Jets open the season at Houston.
