Vikings, Winfield agree on five-year extension
Entering the final year of his contract, Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield was frustrated by the slow pace of negotiations on a contract extension.
However, that changed today when Winfield and the Vikings agreed to a five-year extension is worth $36 million and includes $16.1 million in guarantees, according to Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Now Winfield will be a Viking until 2013.
So, in other words, he'll be a Viking for his entire career.
“It was important for me because I wanted to finish my career here,” said Winfield. “This will be my last stop. Usually you see a lot of players when they get up in age go to different teams. That won’t happen to me. Once I’m done playing for the Vikings, my career will be over.”
Winfield, who turned 32 last month, earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl last season, which was his tenth in the NFL.
Earlier in the off-season, the Vikings signed Cedric Griffin, their other starting cornerback, to a five-year extension as well.
