Calvin Pace gets four-game suspension
The NFL has suspended Jets linebacker Calvin Pace for the first four regular-season games of the 2009 NFL season for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
Although Pace will be allowed to participate in practices and games throughout the pre-season, Pace will miss games against the Texans, Patriots, Titans and Saints. He will be allowed to return to practice on October 5th, which is the day after the Jets' game against the Saints. (Full Jets' schedule here)
His regular-season debut will be against the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football (Oct. 12th). What are the chances that Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder keeps quiet about one of Rex Ryan's linebackers failing a drug test?
"This is a situation that resulted from an over-the-counter dietary supplement that contained a substance that I did not know violated the League’s policy," Pace said. "I am responsible for what I put into my body and I should have paid closer attention to the league’s guidelines. I regret that this has happened and apologize to my teammates, the entire Jets organization as well as the fans. Hopefully, this does not distract from our ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl."
Perhaps Pace is telling the truth and failed the test due to consuming an over-the-counter product that contains a banned substance. There is no way for me to know, but I do know that he failed a test.
And I also know that many other players who have failed drug tests claim it was from using over-the-counter products. While the NFL has been more proactive in their fight against PEDs than other sports' leagues, it's still a black eye for the league's reputation.
So, what I don't understand is, why isn't there a list of over-the-counter products that contain banned substances?
