Jets and Mark Sanchez agree to contract
The New York Jets averted a three-peat of their first-round pick not being signed by training camp by making ex-USC QB Mark Sanchez the highest-paid player in team history.
Their past two first-rounders (Darrelle Revis in 2007 and Vernon Gholston in 2008) were holdouts when training camp opened.
Per Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Jets have signed Sanchez to a five-year contract that is worth $50 million ($28 million guaranteed). However, Bob Glauber of Newsday reports that the value of the contract could reach $60 million.
As Rich Cimini of the NY Daily News points out, it is surprising that Sanchez got a five-year (instead of six-year) deal since most QBs drafted in the top five usually receive six-year deals.
Matthew Stafford, who was drafted first overall, received a six-year deal worth $78 million with the Detroit Lions.
