Jim Schwartz states the obvious
Detroit Lions first-year head coach Jim Schwartz, who inherits the league's first-ever 0-16 team, has stated the obvious.
And based on what RB Kevin Smith wrote on his blog, the obvious needed to be stated.
While Smith wouldn't predict the number of wins the Lions would have in 2009, he took it one step further. He guaranteed the Lions would make the playoffs, which has become somewhat of a tradition since ex-Lions QB Jon Kitna started it in 2007.
And based on the moves the new regime has made this off-season, I believe the Lions will be better. Then again, it's impossible to lose less than zero games.
Even though the Miami Dolphins showed that a team could go from one win to 11 wins (and make the playoffs) in one season, there is never a reason to make guarantees about making the playoffs, the number of wins, or even a win in a particular game. Prove it on the field!

"I like his enthusiasm," Schwartz said. "I don't want to discourage enthusiasm, but the playoffs are a long way away. What's more important is what happens today, how we practice today. Those are the things that we need to take care of on a daily basis. That's been the message. We need to set goals on a shorter scale than further on down the line.Smith had a great rookie season as he was just shy of 1000 rushing yards on the season and had 671 rushing yards in the final eight games of the season.
We don't want to talk about Super Bowls or playoffs or those kinds of things, or even the opener right now. Let's not talk about the opener. Let's talk about getting through this next OTA (organized training activity) and improving. And when you start building that stuff, then that other stuff will take care of itself."
