Will Jets "take a player at 17"?
As trade talks surrounding the New York Jets builds and the NFL draft approaches (33 hours away), Brian Costello of the New York Post expects it to be difficult for Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum to do what he says he's going to do.
The Jets have the 17th overall pick and six total draft picks.
If USC QB Mark Sanchez isn't selected by the Seattle Seahawks with the fourth pick or the Cleveland Browns with the fifth pick as some project, a bidding war between the Jets, Broncos and Redskins could ensue to trade up and draft Sanchez.
The Jets have said (publicly) they are comfortable with their QBs and Kellen Clemens appears to be in the lead in the QB battle. But the Jets' biggest weakness is their lack of experience at QB.
The Redskins aggressively pursued Jay Cutler, who was traded to the Bears, but Jim Zorn has said the 'Skins are committed to Jason Campbell and the team reportedly cleared the air with Campbell after the attempt to acquire Cutler. That being said, they are believed to be very interested in Sanchez.
Too bad Sanchez won't be in New York for the drama.
"Right now, we're really comfortable with where we are at 17," Tannenbaum said last week. "If opportunities came along that we thought made sense for the organization, we'll take a long look at it, but right now we fully anticipate taking a player at 17."In the past, Tannenbaum has orchestrated draft-day moves that landed the Jets Darrelle Revis, Dustin Keller, etc.
