AFL team offers contract to Michael Vick as "joke"
Reports were that the Albany Firebirds had offered imprisoned QB Michael Vick an arenafootball2 one-year contract for the league standard provided NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated Vick. The league-standard contract pays $200 per game as well as a $50 bonus per win.
However, Firebirds team owner Walter Robb says it was a "joke" that he didn't know about.
However, Firebirds team owner Walter Robb says it was a "joke" that he didn't know about.
"That's a joke," Robb said Tuesday evening. "Can you imagine him playing for $200 a week? I think (the offer) was a big mistake. I just found out about it 10 minutes ago."Of course, Vick would never have played for $200 per game. Whether Robb "just found out about it" or not, it was a free way to generate buzz and publicity around a team that otherwise would receive very little of it.
"I certainly would not have approved it if I had known it was even being joked about," Robb said. "I'm a dog lover and I don't want anything to do with (Vick)."
