Paycut saves Raiders cap space, Walker his job
Javon "Rain Maker" Walker made $12 million in his first season with the Oakland Raiders. Walker had 15 receptions for 196 yards and 1 TD in 8 games last year.
So, in other words, he earned $800,000 per reception, $61,224 per receiving yard and $12 million per TD catch.
It surprised me (sort-of, since Al Davis was signing the checks) that the Raiders signed Walker to a 6-year, $55 million contract before the start of last season. And it surprised me that Davis didn't take the opportunity to let Walker "retire" and run with it before the season started.
But the Raiders and Walker have agreed to restructure Walker's deal. He won't receive a $5 million roster bonus, but instead will have his next 2 seasons' salaries guaranteed.
Over the remaining years of his contract, he will receive the following base salaries (original contract values in parenthesis): $2 million ($4 million) in 2009, $2.6 million ($6 million) in 2010, $3.2 million ($8 million) in 2011, $3.8 million ($10 million) in 2012 and $4.4 million ($10 million) in 2013.
