Dan Orlovsky to become free agent
Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky has decided to enter free agency on Friday, when the free agent period officially begins at 12:01 a.m.
A few weeks ago, Mike Furrey, who was cut by the Lions, said that Daunte Culpepper would be the starter this season, but the Lions denied that a decision had been made.
Unless you have a franchise QB such as Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, etc., GMs and coaches are always going to say there is competition at QB.
But most expect Culpepper to be the 2009 Lions starting QB whether or not there is an open competition.
Orlovsky threw for 1,616 yards and 8 TDs in 2008. He also threw 8 INTs.
"They made an offer, but I'm going to test the market and see what's out there for me," Orlovsky said. "I'm pretty confident that I'm going to get a better offer."Orlovsky, who started 7 games for the Lions in 2008, wants to be a starter.

"I told Dan when I talked to him: 'The best player will play,'" [Lions GM Martin] Mayhew said. "'If you come in here and you're the best player to help us win football games, you'll start.'"And if the team selects QB Matthew Stafford with the #1 overall pick in this April's draft, his fate as a career backup QB would have been sealed if he had re-signed with the Lions.
"He was a backup last year, he was a backup before that, he's been a backup his whole career. I don't think anybody would be surprised if I thought he was a backup."
