Tony Dungy retires

Today Tony Dungy announced he will step down as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Dungy has coached for 28 years including 13 seasons as head coach (7 with Colts, 6 with Bucs).

Dungy has mentioned that his priorities were his faith, his family and then football. Now he will have the opportunity to spend more time with his family and be more involved with the community.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a losing season in each of the 13 seasons (1983-1995) before Tony Dungy was hired as coach. In Dungy's 13-year head coaching career, his only losing season as a head coach was his first season (6-10 in 1996 with Tampa).

Dungy-coached teams have earned playoff berths in 10 straight seasons, which is an NFL record since 1970 (AFL/NFL merger). He also has won 12+ wins in each of the past 6 seasons, another NFL record.

With a career record of 139-69 (.668), Dungy ranks 7th all-time in winning percentage. Dungy retires as the all-time winningest coach in Colts history.
"We just felt this was the right time," Dungy said. "Don't shed any tears for me. I got to live a dream most people don't get to live."
Dungy, who was fired from the Bucs for his perceived inability to win the big game, is the only black head coach to win a Super Bowl. (See list of all Super Bowl winners.)

Colts QB Coach Jim Caldwell will succeed Dungy as head coach.
"He is ready, he's more than ready," Dungy said. "He's going to do a great job."
Dungy has a history of leaving franchises better off than when he arrived. That will be a tough feat for Caldwell to accomplish.
